![]() The Architect might've been telling the truth at the time, but Machine logic works in mysterious ways, and Deus Ex Machina potentially discovered a loophole, allowing humanity to be enslaved while still honoring the original agreement with Neo. This curious ending is addressed by The Architect, who, when questioned by The Oracle, proudly states " what do you think I am, human?" This line implies that the concept of deception and lying is exclusive to humans, and to break the pact with Neo is paradoxical to the Machines' nature. Unfortunately, Neo is no longer around to ensure the Machines stick to their side of the agreement, and must rely on faith alone that Deus Ex Machina will stay true to its word. Neo kept his end of the bargain, merging with Smith and allowing the Machines to pump energy through his human body, killing them both. With leverage on his side, Neo agreed to become a conduit to defeat Smith, as long as the Machines called off their centuries-old war with Zion. After attaining the power of The Oracle, Agent Smith became as much a problem for the Machines as he was for Zion, and only The One could possibly take the rogue villain down. Neo's agreement with the Machines in The Matrix Revolutions was based heavily (some might say foolishly) on trust. ![]() But if the Agents remain true to their original remit in The Matrix 4, the Machines must've decided to return to the good ol' days of Sentinel attacks and keeping humans in pods. Perhaps the Machines reprogram Johnson and his pals to act as peacekeepers, or maybe the Agents have been abandoned and rendered obsolete, now existing as exile programs under the Merovingian. It's possible that The Matrix 4 will flip the role of the Agents from the original trilogy. Does the return of Agents Smith and Johnson, therefore, prove the Matrix has reverted to its old ways - that the time of peace is over and the Machines have tightened their cold, emotionless grip once again? In a world where humans are allowed to unplug from the Matrix, the Agents are surely left without reason or purpose. The Agents were to the Matrix what the Gestapo were to Nazi Germany, and just as the Gestapo were disbanded along with Hitler's Nazi regime, the ending of the Matrix trilogy suggests the same fate awaits the Agents. Some even showed open disdain for organic life. The very purpose of the Agents was to oppress and control humans - prevent them leaving the Matrix, kill those who threatened the status quo, etc. It's not yet clear why the services of Neo and Trinity are called upon in The Matrix 4, but the returning Agents perhaps offer a vital clue. ![]() ![]() Related: Why Everyone Wears Sunglasses Inside The Matrix ![]()
